Western Digital Black HDD Teardown Summary

The Western Digital Black HDD has a relatively simple assembly, but it is not a product that was designed for reparability. The fasteners used in this product are required to adhere to strict tolerances and finishes, and therefore would be expensive to manufacture.
Below are certain alternatives featuring several PEM® fasteners that can help achieve better functionality and cost savings.

Alternative PEM® Solutions:

TackSert® Pin

TackSert® Pins should be considered to replace other screws used in the assembly since the
HDD is not designed for reparability (permanent fasteners).

PEM® Snap-in™ Fasteners

An alternative is the snap-in fastener that provides sufficient clamp load with a very low
profile head (0.15 mm). For blind hole applications like in this case,
PEM can also provide an adapter that goes into the drum and receives the snap-in fastener.

PEM® Stainless Steel Stabdoffs – Types CSS, CSOS

Chassis standoffs were sectioned out to see how they were assembled into the design.
It was found that the standoffs are integral to the design and were built into the chassis.
PEM Concealed Head CSS or CSOS standoffs are recommended to replace these standoffs.
